40 Years of Service: Celebrating Mr Stu Gourdie

For four decades, Napier Boys’ High School teacher Stu Gourdie has been a constant and respected presence in the lives of thousands of young men. Reaching the remarkable milestone of 40 years of service at the school reflects not only longevity but also unwavering commitment, integrity, loyalty, and dedication to education and the wider school community.

Over 40 years, Stu has taught through enormous change both in New Zealand and around the world. He began teaching before the internet existed in classrooms and has seen education transformed by computers, smartphones, and artificial intelligence. He taught through major events such as the 1987 share market crash, the Christchurch earthquakes, the COVID-19 pandemic, a 1991 fire that destroyed the entire science block, and numerous social and technological changes that reshaped society. Through it all, Napier Boys’ students continued to benefit from his steady presence and commitment.

Since beginning at Napier Boys’ High School in 1986, Stu has contributed to almost every imaginable area of school life. Over the years, he has served as Head of Department of Mathematics for 20 years, Dean for 10 years, Hostel Master for 6 years, acting Senior Master for 6 months, and, famously, even stepped into the role of acting Headmaster for 1 memorable day. Regardless of the title attached to the role, one thing remained consistent — Stu always placed students first.

As a mathematics teacher, Stu has likely taught just under 5,000 students across all year levels over four decades. That figure alone represents an extraordinary impact on the Hawke’s Bay community. Generations of former students would remember his classroom, his humour, his high expectations, and his genuine care for young people. Many students who once sat in his classroom now have children of their own attending the school, a rare testament to the longevity of his influence.

Outside the classroom, Stu’s contribution to sport at Napier Boys’ has been immense. A passionate rugby man, he coached numerous teams over the years, including the prestigious First XV. One of the highlights came in 2002 when the First XV won the National Top 4 title, cementing its place among the great teams in the school’s proud rugby history. Stu was heavily involved in an era regarded as one of the strongest periods in Napier Boys’ rugby. He also gave countless hours to coaching cricket and supporting co-curricular activities, understanding the important role sport plays in shaping character, discipline, and teamwork.

Stu’s love of rugby extended beyond the school gates. Many in Hawke’s Bay would recognise his voice from local radio commentary of NPC rugby matches, where his passion and knowledge of the game were always evident.
One story that perfectly captures Stu’s willingness to serve occurred in 1999 when he led a school tour to Japan after the teacher in charge of Japanese was unable to travel. Despite not being the obvious choice, Stu stepped up without hesitation, ensuring students still received the opportunity and experience they had been looking forward to.

Stu Gourdie’s 40 years at Napier Boys’ High School represent far more than time served. It reflects a life dedicated to young people, education, sport, and the values of service and loyalty. His contribution to the school community is both immense and lasting.

Congratulations, Stu, and on behalf of all staff and students, both past and present, who have influenced us, we thank you for your service, and we look forward to a few more years of your knowledge at Napier Boys’ High School.
