At Napier Boys’ High School, we continue to be committed to empowering our students and strengthening our community. A key example of this commitment is the impactful relationship we have built with RAD (Refurbish A Device) Project, a collaboration that will now directly benefit local school aged students through a valuable partnership with the Birthright Hawke’s Bay.
The RAD Project was born from a powerful vision to provide essential laptops to students in our community. Through our partnership with RAD, end-of-lease devices are diverted from landfill, expertly refurbished by our students, and given a second life. This initiative not only promotes environmental sustainability within our school and the wider community but also provides crucial equity tools for students to excel in their education.
This valuable scheme is now an integral part of our Level 2 Computer Tech curriculum. Our students gain hands-on experience in a functioning computer workshop, mastering refurbishment skills, understanding the importance of Quality Control and Decommissioning, and building a strong foundation in hardware theory to earn Level 2 credits. This unique opportunity offers practical insights for young men considering careers in electronics.
Term 2, 2025, in partnership with RAD, we proudly handed over 25 fully refurbished laptops to Birthright Hawke’s Bay. This donation reflects the dedication of our students and the strength of our commitment to supporting our local community.
Birthright Hawke’s Bay was chosen as the recipient due to our strong relationship cultivated over the years with their organisation. These laptops will be distributed by Birthright Hawke’s Bay to support Tamariki and their whānau across their early childhood centres, enhancing learning and development. They will also provide vital resources for school children needing devices for BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) initiatives throughout schools in Hawke’s Bay.
Fiona Parrant, Chief Executive Officer at Birthright Hawke’s Bay, and Vernita Piennar from Birthright’s office joined us in our computer workshop. Watching our young men demonstrate their skills was incredibly inspiring, making this occasion a true mark of the positive outcomes possible when schools and community organisations collaborate.
A proud partnership with RAD, and its valuable donation to Birthright Hawke’s Bay, stands as a clear example of our enduring commitment to our students’ growth and to the vibrant community. By blending hands on learning with crucial community support, we’re not just educating young men, we’re collectively building a more promising future for our region.
