In accordance with the Prime Minister’s announcement today

Kia ora koutou,

We trust that all students, whānau and your loved ones are safe and healthy.

Given the recent increase in transmission and extension of the Alert Level 4 lockdown, Napier Boys’ High School will continue be closed for onsite learning and access through until 11:59pm Tuesday, 24 August.  I can assure you that we are working hard to make the transition to online learning as seamless as possible.

As mentioned in our previous message, our boys’ wellbeing is at the forefront of everything we do. I recognise that our Scinde House boys safely made their way home on Tuesday. A special thank you to all our whānau who quickly responded to our request.

Please remember we are here to help, therefore, reach out to us if your son(s) needs any support during this time. Our skilled school counsellors, Rob Silver and Tracy Courtney, are working remotely and can be contacted via phone 021 1094820 or by email wellbeing@nbhs.school.nz  Also, a reminder that the 1737 call-line is open to everyone if you need to talk to a trained counsellor.

The school closure means all students will transition onto remote learning until further notice, notwithstanding that the current Alert Level 4 lockdown could be extended. School will continue to be closed even if we move into Alert Level 3.  I am sure you have many questions, and you can find attached information and guidelines about our online learning platform.  This document outlines what students need to do to engage in their distance learning using the Microsoft TEAMS learning platform.  From next week we want our boys to make connections with their teachers, to access their TEAMS account and start working on the material that teachers have set. If for any reason your son cannot access the work, he should email his teacher directly. We encourage and teach our boys to self-manage and work with intent but often they need a little persuasion.  Your encouragement and support will go a long way in motivating them to enquire, communicate and participate.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your son’s teacher—your partnership is vital. Teacher emails can be found here https://www.nbhs.school.nz/about/staff-2/

There have been enquiries from families about access to devices.  Unfortunately, our resources are limited. In the first instance, priority will be given to our seniors. Students will be contacted in due course outlining how devices will be distributed.

Like last year, all sport and cultural activities are suspended at Alert Level 4. We await further instruction related to planned, or upcoming, tournaments and cultural events.  We understand for many students and their whānau this stoppage may cause disruption and disappointment.

We will continue to communicate with you in the coming days. We encourage you to visit reliable sources of information. This includes the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education Unite against COVID-19 website

In the meantime, take care of yourself. We are in the best possible situation and must be grateful for the decisive decision made to move and stay at Level 4. Do let us know if there is anything we can do to support you, or with any suggestions, you may have. We will be in touch to ensure that you are kept up to date.
