Napier Boys’ High School Curriculum

‘What is best for Boys’

The Napier Boys’ High School curriculum has been designed in keeping with the philosophy of ‘What is best for Boys’.

The School's success is based on a wide range of learning experiences inside and outside of the classroom. Streaming ensures that teaching and learning are appropriate to the ability of the student. This raises the students' self worth and creates stimulating and purposeful learning.

Individual potential is developed and nurtured in a variety of ways. Classes in the Junior Accelerate Programme exist to enrich student learning and extend their participation in formal qualifications in Year 10 (NCEA Level 1).

Mainstream Junior Classes provide a positive work environment and develop individual potential in classes of a smaller size. Specialist teachers with an empathy and interest in learning difficulties teach core subjects to the Learning Support class while option subjects are kept within the mainstream.

Class placement is reviewed at key times and is based on merit. All students are encouraged to respect the learner and show pride in their performance. Examinations are the key form of assessment whereby all students sit internal examinations twice per year and external examinations are sat by all senior students, as well as those involved in the Junior Accelerate programme.

The wide range of options reflects the commitment of the school to provide a curriculum that is relevant to the needs of the 21st century learner.
